A substance use disorder evaluation is a comprehensive assessment conducted by a trained professional  to determine whether someone has a substance use disorder (SUD). This evaluation helps identify the nature and severity of substance misuse and is often used to guide treatment decisions.

The evaluation typically includes the following:

Clinical Interview: The provider will ask questions about the individual's substance use patterns, including the types of substances used, frequency, and quantity. They will also inquire about the person’s physical and mental health history, any history of substance-related problems, and the impact of substance use on their personal, social, and work life.

Diagnostic Criteria: Using criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), the evaluation helps determine if the person’s substance use meets the criteria for a substance use disorder. This may involve assessing symptoms such as cravings, tolerance, withdrawal, and impaired control.

Physical and Mental Health Assessment: This includes evaluating the person’s overall health, mental health conditions (such as anxiety, depression), and any medical complications related to substance use (e.g., liver damage, heart issues).

Risk Assessment: The evaluation also includes assessing the risks the individual might face related to their substance use, such as overdose, legal issues, or relationship problems.

The goal of the evaluation is to gain a clear understanding of the person’s substance use, its impact on their life, and any co-occurring mental health conditions so that a tailored treatment plan can be developed. This might include therapy, counseling, medication, or other interventions.
